How to Build a Lasagna Garden Bed

Step 1: Choose the Location

  • Select a sunny spot with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight and good drainage. Ensure it’s easily accessible for planting and maintenance.

Step 2: Gather Materials

  • Cardboard/Newspaper: A bottom layer to smother weeds.
  • Brown Materials: Dry leaves, straw, or shredded newspaper for carbon.
  • Green Materials: Kitchen scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds for nitrogen.
  • Compost: Enriches the soil with nutrients and microorganisms.
  • Soil: Finish with high-quality soil or potting mix for planting.

Step 3: Layering

  • Start with a thick layer of cardboard or newspaper to block weeds.
  • Add alternating layers of brown and green materials, lightly watering each layer to promote decomposition.
  • Build the bed to a height of 18-24 inches, balancing the layers.

Step 4: Planting

  • Let the bed settle for a few weeks as materials decompose.
  • Plant vegetables, herbs, or flowers directly into the nutrient-rich soil.

Step 5: Maintenance

  • Water regularly, especially in dry weather.
  • Add more compost or mulch over time to maintain moisture and replenish nutrients.
  • Lasagna gardening is a simple and sustainable way to build fertile soil, suppress weeds, and create a thriving garden with minimal effort.
