Growing watermelons, an essential summer fruit, at home can be both rewarding and fun. While traditionally grown on the ground in large gardens, not everyone has the luxury of ample space. This article covers two innovative methods to grow watermelons at home – the hammock method, ideal for beginners, and the soil sack method.
The Hammock Method (Beginner-Friendly)
For those with limited ground space or who simply want to try an innovative method, the hammock method is a great solution.
Materials:
- Young watermelon plant
- Sturdy trellis or vertical structure
- Garden netting or fabric to create a hammock
- Sturdy twine or garden strings
- Potting soil
- Container with drainage holes
Steps and Preparation:
Choose a container large enough to accommodate the growth of a watermelon plant. Fill it with high-quality potting soil and plant your watermelon seedling.
Setting Up the Trellis:
Position your trellis or vertical structure near your planted container.
Training the Vine:
As the watermelon plant grows, gently guide its vines onto the trellis, securing them with garden strings.
Creating the Hammock:
Once the watermelon fruit starts to grow, support it with a hammock made from garden netting or fabric. Attach the hammock to the trellis, ensuring it is strong enough to support the growing fruit.
Harvest:
When the watermelon reaches full size and shows signs of ripeness (such as a creamy yellow spot where it rests), carefully remove it from the hammock and enjoy!
The Soil Sack Method
An alternative method that gives your watermelon a more traditional ground feel without taking up garden space.
